Starting with The Masters , this revered tournament is played every year in April on the same exclusive course – Augusta National Golf Glub in Georgia. The beauty of the flowers, shrubs and trees during this time of the year is truly breathtaking since they are in full bloom. Membership to this private golf course is strictly by invitation only. It is estimated by Golf Digest that adding the ratings for the green surface in each of the 18 holes on an average US Open course comes up to a difficulty rating of 110. Augusta National's total rating came out to be a high of 148. It is widely believed that a golfer can drive the ball anywhere and only the greens pose a problem. In actuality, if a golfer drives a ball on a wrong spot on the green, the golfer would have to three-putt all of them. A great drive, the, is the only way to get the best approach shots. Next, we have the the US Open which is held in June. This rotation of courses place a premium on the golfer's accurate driving skills. Out of the field of 156 players, about half of the players are fully exempt from qualifying. This tournament is where Tiger Woods broke Old Tom Morris' record for the largest margin of victory for the majors. He did it by 15 strokes in 2000, an all-time record for all majors. British Open, which is also known as The Open Championship in the UK, became a major stop for professional golfers during the 1960s when Arnold Palmer decided to compete in the UK. It is the oldest of the four major championships and is the only major held outside the United States. Held in July, it is played on a different links course out of nine historic golf locations. It features a four hole playoff for all golfers tied at the end of regulation. One of the nine golf courses featured in the rotation for this tournament is the famous Old Course at St Andrews. The PGA Championship follows the Open and is held on the 4th weekend after the British Open. As with the other championship events, winners are automatically invited to participate in the other three majors for the next five years. Unlike the other majors, a PGA Champion is exempt from qualifying for life. Formally a match play event, it switched to stroke play in 1958. David Toms in 2001, held the lowest absolute 72-hole score of 265. This is the lowest 72-hole score ever recorded in any major championship. Written by Barry Gordon for http://www.ticketcity.com .
