The Sea Pine Golf Course owned and run by the Thai army open in 2010 offering 7,305 yards designed next to the sea, developed to provide golfers a wide variety of links-style challenges. Wind conditions cause the course to play quite differently from day to day. With 12 holes closer inland near the main road, the six holes fronting along the beach add to this interesting fairly flat layout.
The dogleg par-five 12th hole challenges you from the tee with bunkers along the fairway and lateral water up the right side. A small bunker sits waiting in the middle of the fairway daring you to go for it with a driver or ‘play it safe’ by opting for a ‘lay-up’ approach.
Down the stretch at Sea Pine, the sea breeze become a factor and the last three holes are among the most memorable in Hua Hin golf. Hole 16 is another par five dogleg that requires a drive to a narrow downhill landing area with water looming on both sides. Golfers look down at the hole for their second shot with a panoramic view of the ocean and the mountains. The toughest part of this hole is the approach shot. A player has to decide whether to play over the water onto a sloping green or take a conservative route via the left side of the fairway.
The signature 17th hole is a par three with a spectacular ocean view backdrop. The tee shot is all carry over water to a wide undulating green protected by beach sand front and rear. The key here may be to attack the front pins but play to the center of the green otherwise, depending on the wind as you make your decision facing the large lake and peninsula green.
The par four finishing hole is among the most difficult on the course. A canal poses a major hazard that requires golfers to drive 220 yards over water to reach the fairway. A safe lay-up approach with a fairway wood is an available option for conservative players.
This course has in a very short space of time become a favorite for all and in 2016 hosted the Asian Tour’s Q School.
They have a modern clubhouse overlooking the Gulf of Thailand and here you can enjoy some great Thai food. This municipal golf course is good value for money, but Hua Hin golf visitors must take note that Army officers and their guests have priority for starting times. Guests on a tight schedule or in a hurry are advised to check on course crowdedness ahead of time or play elsewhere.
