Plutaluang Navy Golf Course was designed by a Thai Royal Navy committee and opened in 1969 to take full advantage of the natural beauty of the landscape. Set in a wooded valley with mature trees of all types, Plutaluang is a must play for nature lovers.
It is built around a huge natural reservoir, surrounded by dazzling flowers, singing birds, and scampering forest creatures. You may see legions of monkeys working their way through the fruits and seeds that come and go with the seasons.
Unlike modern Thai golf courses, that typically have a professional golfer design the course and then employ a construction firm to excavate the terrain, Plutaluang Royal Thai Navy Golf Course is an old school natural golf course offering some of the best Asian golf available anywhere. The Zoysia fairways and greens help conserve water, which is more typical of courses in Phuket and Malaysia.
The four nines are named after the cardinal points North, South, East, and West. The first two are the core of the old course with East and West having been constructed in the 1990s. Overall you have 13,076 yards to play, with each nine playing to standard par 36. Golfers can usually choose the two nines they wish to play when they check-in. Each nine has a variety of tests comprised of narrow fairways, well-protected greens, hazards, and very thick rough.
The two most notable holes are the third hole on the North Course and ninth hole on the South Course. The former is a par three with its own lighthouse and island green. Very much a Kodak moment here. The course is a Parkland style design and is set on wooded, rolling terrain. The fairways are narrow and lined with trees and bunkers to catch the wayward shot. Although fairways are narrow, the greens are relatively easy with few undulations. The lakes nine has plenty of water that comes into play off the tee and around the greens.
The refurbished clubhouse is well laid-out with well-maintained lockers & showers, and they charge a modest towel fee. The pro-shop is simple and has a small stock of basic golf items while the restaurant has excellent views across the golf course and surrounding hills. Drinks and Thai food are very reasonably priced as the course is essentially a public Navy facility. This is a great place to “finish” a round. The friendly attitude of the staff, natural layout, and low costs really make for an enjoyable day of golf in Pattaya.
